Casino Glossary: 25 Terms Every Player Should Know

Casino offers and slot reviews are full of jargon. Here are the 25 terms you'll meet most often, explained in one or two sentences each.

Bonus

Extra money or free spins a casino gives you, usually when you deposit. It almost always comes with conditions.

Wagering requirement (rollover)

The amount you must bet before you can withdraw bonus winnings. A 35x wager on a €100 bonus means €3,500 in bets.

Sticky bonus

A bonus that can never be withdrawn itself: only the winnings above it can be cashed out.

Non-sticky bonus

A bonus where you play with your own money first; if you win before using the bonus, you can usually withdraw freely.

Max bet rule

The largest bet allowed while a bonus is active, often around €5. Breaking it can void your winnings.

Game contribution

How much each game counts toward wagering. Slots usually count 100%, table games much less.

Cashback

A percentage of your net losses paid back over a period, sometimes with wagering.

Rakeback

A percentage of every bet returned to you, win or lose, often with no wagering.

Free spins

Spins on a slot paid by the casino. Their winnings often carry wagering.

RTP (return to player)

The share of all bets a game pays back over the long run. A 96% RTP keeps 4% on average.

Volatility

How wins are spread out. Low volatility pays small wins often; high volatility pays rarely but bigger.

Hit frequency

How often a slot produces any win, shown as a percentage of spins.

Max win

The largest payout a slot can give, shown as a multiple of your bet.

Cluster pays

A slot mechanic where wins form when enough matching symbols touch, instead of lining up on paylines.

Megaways

A mechanic where the number of symbols on each reel changes every spin, creating up to hundreds of thousands of ways to win.

Hold and Win

A bonus where special symbols stick in place and reset a counter of respins, often with jackpots.

Bonus buy

An option to pay a fixed price to trigger a slot's bonus round immediately.

Provably fair

A system, common in crypto casinos, that lets you check each game result wasn't manipulated.

House edge

The casino's average advantage on a game, the opposite of RTP. Blackjack with basic strategy is around 0.5%.

KYC

Know Your Customer: the identity check casinos require before withdrawals.

Withdrawal limit

The maximum a casino lets you withdraw per day, week or month.

Licence

The authorisation a casino holds from a regulator, such as Malta (MGA), Curaçao or Anjouan.

Basic strategy

The mathematically best decision for every blackjack hand, which minimises the house edge.

Soft hand

A blackjack hand with an ace counted as 11, such as ace and 6 (soft 17).

Push

A tie between you and the dealer: your bet is returned.
